Donate vs. Sell Your Dorm Items: Which Is Better?
When donating beats selling, when it doesn't, and why a campus resale program can make both options better for the next student.

Move-out gives you three real options for anything you're not keeping: donate it, sell it, or throw it away. The right call depends mostly on two things — how much time you have before you leave, and whether your campus makes either option easy.
When selling makes sense
Selling is worth the effort when you have at least a week or two of lead time, the item has real resale value (electronics, quality furniture, unopened supplies), and there's a straightforward place to list it — a campus marketplace, a class group chat, or a general platform. The tradeoff is time: photographing, listing, answering messages, and coordinating a pickup all cost more effort than dropping something in a donation bin on your way out.
When donating makes sense
Donating wins when you're short on time (which, at move-out, is most of the time), the item has real use but low resale value (bedding, a desk lamp, a set of hangers), or your campus has a donation program that makes it as easy as walking to a bin instead of a mailbox. It also means zero coordination — no messages to answer, no meetup to schedule.
The false choice: a campus resale program does both
The donate-vs-sell tradeoff mostly exists because, without a campus program, "sell" means doing the work yourself. Campuses running a collect-and-resell move-out program collapse that tradeoff: you donate the item with the same effort as a donation drop-off, the campus stores and prices it over the summer, and it's resold to an incoming student at move-in — at a fraction of retail, with the proceeds typically funding the program itself rather than going to an outside retailer. You get the low effort of donating with the resale value going to another student instead of a landfill.
How to check what your campus offers
Ask your resident advisor or check your housing office's website for a move-out donation program before you decide — see our full move-out sorting guide for what's typically worth keeping, donating, or selling either way.
