BruIN MoveOUT ran for roughly four weeks during UCLA's 2026 spring move-out (May 21 – June 16), with student staff logging donations directly into ReDorm as they came in rather than reconstructing totals from memory afterward.
The result is a real, itemized inventory: 856 items across 163 distinct product types, totaling 2,335 lbs diverted from landfill. Those goods carry roughly 4.7 metric tons of CO2e in embodied manufacturing emissions — already spent making them, and now kept in use rather than spent again on replacements. Applying ReDorm's per-category displacement rates, an estimated 2.63 metric tons of new production was avoided.
Cataloging that many items by hand — photographing, weighing, and categorizing each one — typically runs about 15 minutes per item. Captured through ReDorm's scan-based intake instead, the 27-day collection window saved an estimated 214 hours of manual data-entry work.
UCLA's program is scoped to collection today; the same inventory record is what a future move-in storefront would sell against.
How these numbers are measured
Weight and emissions figures are computed by ReDorm's platform from the actual items logged at intake, using per-category weight and material data with EPA WARM–derived factors. Embodied carbon is attributional: the cradle-to-gate manufacturing emissions of the goods collected. Avoided production is a separate consequential estimate, equal to embodied carbon multiplied by a published per-category displacement rate, because not every reused item replaces a purchase of a new one; it is reported alongside a greenhouse gas inventory rather than deducted from one. The avoided figure applies the displacement rates introduced in methodology V1.3.0 (September 2026) to this same August 2026 snapshot. Figures reflect the 2026 spring move-out season and are not a lifetime total. "Hours saved" is a modeled estimate — 15 minutes of manual photographing, weighing, categorizing, and logging assumed for each of the 856 items collected — not a measured time-tracking figure. "Days tracked" is the length of the collection window (May 21 – June 16, 2026).
