Move-Out as Community: Making Donations Exciting and Move-In More Equitable
For student life and engagement staff: using reuse to build community, engage students, and lower the cost of starting college.
For many students, especially first-generation and low-income students, the cost of furnishing a dorm room is a real barrier on day one. Meanwhile, the students moving out are often looking for an easy, meaningful way to pass their things on. A well-designed reuse program connects the two and builds community along the way.
Timed for Earth Month, this session covers how to make move-out donations something students are excited to take part in (campaigns, challenges between halls, and student volunteer roles) and how to design move-in redistribution so it's affordable, dignified, and reaches the students who need it. We'll also talk about partnering with student organizations, basic-needs centers, and residence hall associations to make reuse part of campus culture instead of a one-time drive.
You'll walk away with
- Engagement ideas that boost move-out donations
- Principles for an equitable, low-cost move-in redistribution
- A plan for bringing student groups and basic-needs partners into the program
Who should join
Student life and engagement staff, basic-needs and first-gen program staff, RA and RHA advisors, and student sustainability leaders.
